Cretan Terracotta - Handmade Pots

Discover the exquisite beauty of entirely handmade terracotta with a rich history dating back over 8000 years. Our collection features the finest genuine Cretan Pots and Pitharia, crafted exclusively for those who appreciate the artistry of pottery production in ancient times.

Advantages

  • Sustainability: Made from high-quality, natural Cretan clay, these pots are eco-friendly, free from harmful chemicals, and safe for both plants and the environment.
  • Aesthetics: 100% handcrafted on a potter’s wheel, giving each pot a rustic, earthy charm that complements any garden style, from traditional to contemporary.
  • Durability: Fired at high temperatures for superior strength, Cretan pots resist cracking, fading, and weathering, enduring various conditions (sun, rain, frost). Over time, they develop a unique patina that adds to their beauty.
  • Plant Health: The porous nature of the terracotta promotes better moisture regulation and airflow, preventing waterlogging and fungal diseases while insulating roots from temperature stress, fostering healthier plants.
  • Tested Through the Ages: Cretan pots have been used for thousands of years, from ancient civilizations like the Minoans and Romans to the Venetians and Ottomans, who trusted their quality for everything from home décor to storage.

Important Info

  • Avoid direct contact with the ground: The porous nature of terracotta absorbs water, which can freeze in winter and cause cracks. When placing pots on hard surfaces like paving, gravel, or concrete. Use terracotta feet to raise the pots slightly for added protection.
  • Ensure proper drainage: All pots have a drainage hole, which should stay clear to avoid excess water buildup. Use expanded clay granules (Leca) or broken crockery in the base to maintain drainage.
  • Use quality compost: Opt for premium, peat-free compost (like John Innes No. 2 or 3) for healthy plant growth.

  • Avoid bamboo: Its aggressive root system can block drainage holes, damage the pot, and cause cracks.

Planting Advice

  • Winter care: While the pots are frost-resistant, during severe frost, wrap them in bubble wrap or waterproof covers to protect the roots and soil. Excess water in the pot could still lead to damage if frozen.
  • Aging and Patina: Over time, the pots will develop a natural patina that adds to their charm. It's best to let them age gracefully, as this enhances their Mediterranean aesthetic. Avoid scrubbing off the patina too aggressively.
